All areas have their own central problems that haunt the entire discipline. For architects, among whose ranks we also find Paco Ulman, one such question is the reality of digitally created space. Linear perspective, axonometry and now also 3D ‒ all these methods of representation have sought to present reality as directly as possible.
For the “mememe” series shown at Hobusepea Gallery this February, Ulman converted the geometrical structures of places intimately familiar to him to 3D and then printed the images out in 2D. It is as if the photographs show the same place, but the artificiality of how the image was generated, its emotional independence from us, makes it a different, unfamiliar place.
