Eilve Manglus
The photographers’ desire to expand their medium is too common to be mentioned, whereas the photographic experiments of artists from other fields can be fascinating. Eilve Manglus is a jewellery designer whose Master’s dissertation (at the Estonian Academy of Arts) explored the use of photography in jewellery.
The series created by the artist is made up of photographs etched into small zinc sheets and attached to wooden bases, which function primarily as jewellery and accessories, yet acquire an additional, deeper meaning. The postcard-like views are combined with random images – historic with contemporary. The etched statuses, moods and desires have an independent symbolic value, but presenting these sentiments not just as beautiful photographs but beautiful objects – which jewellery almost inevitably is – allows for layers of meaning photographs would never be able to express.
It is also worth noting that the author considers the wooden elements as being as important as the photographs – this is evident from the way she has described the object in her digital portfolio. So, the description “photographs attached to wooden base” used in the previous paragraph refers to the two dimensional approach to photography, which can be overthrown with the help of artists from other fields.
