Marge Monko

Marge Monko belongs among the internationally recognised elite from within Estonian fine art photography. In her socially critical creative practice, various story lines are observable. In 2009, she focused her work on the Kreenholm factory in the border town of Narva, dedicating an entire series of works to the socio-historical and spatial legacy of the factory. Then 2013 saw Monko place similar focus on the Punane Koit (Red Dawn) sock factory, formerly active in Tallinn, which assumed an important place in the context of her Henkel Art Award show “Kuidas kanda punast” (“How to wear red”).

A feminist undertone dominates Monko’s approach. Her focus on the textile industry, where women dominate both as employees and as the target group for the products, is therefore no surprise. At the same time, with her work she seeks to re-attribute value to the labour movement as a much broader social force. Even a “militant” feminism is not necessarily chauvinism.
